L'interféron de type I (alpha ou bêta) est une substance antivirale codée par un gène situé sur le chromosome 9. L'interféron de type II (gamma) est codé pr un gène situé sur le chromosome 12.
L'interféron alpha recombinant est utilisé en thérapie antivirale (hépatites B et C, Kaposi, au cours du SIDA) mais aussi en thérapie anti-cancéreuse.
